Performance History
31st March – 5th April 2026, The Impro Melbourne Theatre
BACKGROUND:
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson have always been in the conversation when Innes and Lloyd have been discussing where to go next with their literary adaptations for the stage. For one reason or another this idea was always put on the backburner. To be fair, it is a rather daunting prospect when it comes to looking at Sherlock Holmes, simply because of the sheer mass of adventures spanning novels, short stories, plays, radio dramas, TV shows and movies. Not to mention the variety of different performances, interpretations, modernisations and re-toolings there are out there.
However, the idea of having a go at the great crime-fighting duo stayed with Lloyd until finally, the perfect format to present this new, unique and thoroughly Innes Lloyd version of Holmes & Watson came about via a brainstorming session.
In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, he always mentioned in passing other cases that Holmes has been on but were never turned into published stories. All of them had bizarre and enticing titles. For over a century fans have speculated what these untold stories could be.
Hence the Holmes Unbound series was created. Innes Lloyd would take the titles of these cases and turn them into original adventures for the stage. Told over a number of shows, each one would either tell a couple of different stories or just one. The Holmes Unbound format allows Innes Lloyd the chance to bring different genres and styles to the world of Holmes and allows them creative licence to go as silly, scary or surreal as they want.
In The Lost Casebook of Sherlock Holmes (the first show in the Holmes Unbound series) Innes Lloyd present three ‘lost’ adventures:

"Holmes Unbound: The Lost Casebook of Sherlock Holmes. It’s a theatrical marvel that’s highly original and breathtakingly fast-paced.
The two star performers, David Innes and Rob Lloyd, pour out witticisms with alacrity. Fluffed lines pardoned and inside jokes with known audience members forgiven, the pair work with gusto to secure the backbone of their staging of mayhem. They are fearless in their buffoonery. Their collaborators, Chloë Towan and Liliana Braumberger are versatile and flexible. They need to be, given the multitude of roles they switch between enacting the pantheon of other characters in the Homes and Watson universe: Moriarty, Colonel Warburton, Mrs Warburton and a host of other characters." ★★★★ The Scoop |

"The audience appreciated the small facts and trivia woven in about Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These touches added a layer of texture and gave the show a gentle nod to its literary roots, even as it gleefully departed from them.
The overall feeling of the performance was one of enthusiasm, wit and genuine enjoyment. The cast clearly put their heart and soul into it and that energy carried the show. All in all, it’s a lively, inventive and warm-hearted night out." ★★★★ What’s the Show? |
